Board Announces New Leadership

The Scripture Union/USA Board of Directors is pleased to announce their December decision to name beloved long-term President, Whitney T. Kuniholm, as President Emeritus of the ministry.

"Whitney's history, ongoing counsel and continued friendship is invaluable as we seek God’s direction for the future of the ministry of Scripture Union in the United States," reported David Young, SU USA Board Chairman. After 19 years as Scripture Union USA's executive leader, Kuniholm founded Essential Bible Ministries in late 2016. He is now active speaking, authoring new books and consulting with other Bible-engagement organizations. The Rev. Mark Brown served SU USA as President for nearly a year after serving in other leadership positions during Kuniholm's transition. However, Rev. Brown resigned in January.

"I love Scripture Union, but have a strong sense that God is taking me in a different direction,” stated Brown, who is a licensed member of the clergy in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas and former National Director of Scripture Union New Zealand.

"We are grateful to God for the depth of our leadership team, our Board and other advisers during this transition period," Board Chairman David Young reflected in receiving Brown’s decision. “And we invite the entire Scripture Union family to join us in prayer for wisdom as we move forward."

Dr Michael Staples

Without hesitation, the Scripture Union/USA Board asked Rev. Dr. Michael Staples, National Director of Field Ministries, at right, to provide enhanced leadership as CEO during the search for a long-term successor.  Staples, who joined SU in 2014, lends his broad background of experience to the position as a missionary, educator, community development director and mobilizer of church volunteers to work with youth and children in a career of 25-plus years.  A graduate of Grove City College, Erskine Seminary and Fuller Seminary where he earned a doctorate in Leadership and Organizational Development, Michael has served as both a teacher/trainer of others and a ministry leader of children and youth throughout Africa, Asia and the US.

Scripture Union/USA offers a broad range of Bible-engagement reading guides and studies for churches, adults and young people, as well as after-school and mission programs specifically developed for children.  It's reading and study guides, ministry to at-risk children, and Essential Series, including E100 and EJesus, have a world-wide impact on those enjoying and/or seeking a closer walk with God.
